ABA Asia Law Initiative (Washington, D.C.)

Established in 1999, ABA-Asia is a public service project that provides technical assistance in support of legal reforms in the countries of Asia. ABA-Asia works in partnership with local organizations (both governmental and non-governmental) to provide ongoing assistance in a variety of areas, including judicial reform, legal profession reform, legal education reform, criminal law-anti-corruption, environmental advocacy, and gender issues.

ABA-Asia’s office is located in Washington, D.C. The executive director, deputy director and four staff members are lawyers. The office regularly has 2-3 law student interns. Externs support the work of the legal staff in all aspects of project work. This includes legal research and writing (particularly pertaining to Asian legal systems); assisting in developing training programs; corresponding with and handling requests of ABA representatives overseas; assisting in grant proposal development; and providing administrative support to the Initiative.
