U.S. District Court Program (Tallahassee)

Number of Positions: 2-3 (1-2 with Judge Walker, 1 with Judge Stampelos)
Program Description: Externing students work in a clerkship capacity with a federal district court judge or magistrate judge. Duties include conducting legal research, drafting memoranda and preparing orders.
Prerequisites: Students must have satisfactorily completed Evidence. Students are not certified pursuant to the Student Practice rule.
Recommended Courses: For Judge Walker: Federal Jurisdiction (strongly recommended), Conflict of Laws, Employment Discrimination, Federal Criminal Law. For Judge Stampelos: Postconviction Remedies, Innocence Project.
Selection Process: Students should submit an application to the FSU COL externship program. The selection of the extern is handled jointly by the faculty supervisor and participating judges. Selection is based on a student applicant's grades, courses, career goals and demonstrated ability in research and writing. For Judge Walker emphasis is placed on writing ability and grades in Federal Jurisdiction, Evidence and Federal Civil Procedure. For Judge Stampelos, students should be interested in postconviction litigation.
