Public Defender's Office

A public defender advises and defends indigent clients in criminal proceedings, serving as the criminal counterpart to the legal services lawyer. Like the state attorney's office, some public defender's offices recruit on campus, and most must be approached individually for jobs. Attorneys are hired as jobs become available and an applicant must spend time searching for a position. You should participate in one of the externship programs for the same reasons mentioned in the discussion of state attorneys. Visit the Florida Public Defenders Association web page for a list of Public Defenders and contact information for the offices.
